When in Henderson…A Business Traveler’s Guide to Navigating Nevada’s Second-Largest City

It may not have all the ritz and glitz of its nearby Vegas neighbor, but don’t think that the serene and pristine town of Henderson isn’t a business-friendly destination.

With a convention center that can accommodate 1,000, two luxurious resorts, an impressive park system and a vibrant community atmosphere, Nevada’s second-largest city attracts many business travelers, whether they come to town for a specific event or are taking a scenic detour from Las Vegas, only about a 20-minute drive away.

In fact, it’s saying a whole lot that Henderson’s Green Valley Ranch™ has been chosen as the venue for one of biggest business travel industry events, ProcureCon Travel, taking place May 7 to 9 this year. At this conference, a can’t-miss for travel procurement managers, it will be a real Who’s Who of the industry’s rock stars, including leaders from Apple™, IBM™, Airbnb™, Nike™ and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club™, according to the attendee list on ProcureCon’s website.

Oh, and full disclosure: As a sponsor of the event, American Express Global Business Travel also will be there. So if you happen to see any of our representatives, be sure to say hello. We’d love to meet you!

Where to lay your head at night

Whether you’re heading to Henderson for ProcureCon or for another business event, consider staying at Green Valley Ranch, a luxurious Vegas-style resort without a hefty price tag.

With ProcureCon starting bright and early (before 8 a.m. both days), wouldn’t it be nice to roll out of bed, get suited up and head down promptly for some breakfast and a.m. mingling?

Plus, with Green Valley boasting an 8-acre “backyard” with plenty of sunbeds lined up next to its sand-bottom pool and the property’s award-winning spa, there’s no reason to leave during your stay — unless you want.

Things are pretty sprawled out in Henderson, a 107-square-mile city. So if you are not staying at Green Valley but going to ProcureCon, your next best bet is the Best Western Plus St. Rose Parkway / Las Vegas Hotel™, which is only three miles away. This top-rated hotel on TripAdvisor™ is modern and clean, and guests have raved about its super-friendly staff. It also is conveniently located within a quarter-mile of restaurants and shopping.

And a bit further out but definitely worth the drive is M Resort™, a sophisticated boutique hotel with ultra-sleek rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows as well as two heated infinity pools, a pair of hot tubs and a world-class spa where you can unwind when you’re all networked out.

Getting around

For a taxi from McCarran International Airport to Henderson, expect to pay about $45 (closer to $60 if there is a lot of traffic). And rest assured, ride-hailing fans. Uber™ and Lyft™ no longer are banned from the Silver State, and you can be picked up by these rides at the airport.

For those who want to cruise around town in their own set of rented wheels, you have about a dozen car rental options at the airport. Just be forewarned: The shuttle service between McCarran airport and the rental car center has been experiencing delays due to major roadwork construction. Click here for further updates.

For an eco-conscious and economical option, consider the RTC Southern Nevada bus. For just a few bucks, be whisked around town and reuse the ticket for up to 24 hours. And because Henderson is regularly ranked as one of the top 10 safest cities in the United States based on FBI statistics, you can feel secure doing so.

Eat where the locals do

Green Valley’s own Hank’s Fine Steaks and Martinis™, with its sleek, mid-century ambiance, is known for impeccable service, juicy prime steaks, and fresh seafood flown in daily.

It may be located in a strip mall, but the breakfast-lunch joint CRAFTKitchen™ has a super-cool vibe and a number of beautifully presented dishes. (Just take a look!) Whether you treat yourself to their house-made French macarons and a latte, go healthy with an organic veggie omelet or dig in to a more substantial plate of short-rib hash, your taste buds will thank us for it.

For a true favorite among locals, check out Todd’s Unique Dining™. And don’t be fooled by the restaurant’s casual atmosphere. Todd’s creative dishes, which change daily and use the freshest of ingredients, will impress even the most sophisticated palates.

If you’ve got a few hours to kill…

Of course with Vegas about 15 miles away, you will have an opportunity to experience the city’s nightlife with many Henderson hotels providing guests with complimentary shuttle service to the Vegas strip. Let yourself be entertained by Céline Dion, a Cirque du Soleil™ show or A-list comedian, or go out and make your own fun.

And for those who crave peace and quiet, you’ll hit the jackpot in Henderson.

Go explore Clark County Wetlands Park, a little oasis in the desert that boasts lush habitats where hundreds of species of plants and animals co-exist.

Burn off some stress hiking or biking the River Mountain Loop Trail, which stretches 34 miles around Lake Mead. Here, you also can take in the beauty of one of America’s most famous man-made constructions, the Hoover Dam.

See lions, cubs, and, oh my, a giraffe at the Lion Habitat Ranch, an 8.5-acre ranch that serves as a sanctuary for about 40 of Mother Nature’s most regal beasts.

Adrenaline junkies looking for the ultimate rush can have a professional aerobatic instructor pilot teach them a few of their tricks at Sky Combat Ace™. Or, if you want to keep closer to ground yet still have a unique adventure, take a ride through the desert behind the wheel of an all-terrain vehicle with Las Vegas ATV Tours™.

Airport survival

Before heading back to the airport for your flight home, be sure to figure out where you need to be dropped off since McCarran has two terminals and they are not physically connected. But don’t panic if you end up at the wrong one. There is a courtesy shuttle that comes every 15 minutes that will help get you to the correct place so that those who travel to Vegas won’t be stranded in Vegas.
